Welcome to day 7 of the mini-course
Working at the Long Rein Â
Today we start with shoulder-out.
Shoulder-out is a lateral movement similar to shoulder-in, but easier to start with because of the fence.
The bending is opposite to the direction you are walking.
It teaches your horse to step with the inside hind leg towards the point of weight.
This improves balance, strength and straightness.
The angle depends on the level of your horse. Start small and increase when your horse becomes more supple and stronger.
The aids:
- Intention
- Energy
- Posture
- Walking direction
- Rein aids
The inside rein stays stable.
The outside rein gives space.

This is the final day of the mini-course...
In the past days, you have built a solid foundation in working at the long reins. You have prepared your horse, worked on clear aids, and developed control in straight lines, circles and changing direction.
With shoulder-out, you have now taken your first step into lateral work.
From here, you can continue to build further.
If you would like to continue, you can join the full program:
Working at the Long Rein – Mastery Program 🎉
